Health & Wellness Programs

Somerville-Cambridge Elder Services

SCES offers a range of health and wellness programs that enhance the quality of life of older people and younger people living with disabilities. Individuals can sign up for classes throughout the year. Space is limited.

The above programs are available to senior residents of Somerville and Cambridge. Transportation is available. The Healthy Eating and Simple Cooking programs have a $10 class fee due at registration. The class fee is waivable for hardship.

The above programs were developed by researchers at Stanford University Medical Center and have been proven to help people just like you. Cost: FREE.

A Matter of Balance Program
Designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels. Sessions include discussion and exercises to improve balance, flexibility, and strength. Each class meets for 2 hours once a week for eight weeks.

Healthy Eating for Successful Living in Older Adults Program
For older adults who want to learn about the health benefits of good nutrition and physical activity. The program promotes heart and bone health, and helps prevent chronic disease. Individual calorie needs are planned using portion control and MyPlate. Each session includes exercising and promotes walking. Participants receive an exercise DVD. Each class meets for 2½ hours once a week for six weeks.

In-Home Fall Prevention Program
A one-on-one in-home program for people who would have difficulty participating in a Fall Prevention Program outside of their home because of mobility and fear of falling.  The program is aimed at improving strength and balance to reduce the risk of falls and increase the participant's ability to safely leave the home.  A trained instructor will conduct four home visits to: Develop an exercise plan that can be done at home, individually, or with the help of a caregiver; Help participants choose an appropriate exercise class in the community, as well as arrange transportation if needed.

Simple Cooking for Your Health Program
Learn to cook healthy low cost meals that are simple to make and taste great. The program focuses on meals that are heart-healthy, low in saturated fat, and high in fiber. It includes demonstrations and food sampling. Each class meets for 1½ hours once a week for six weeks.

My Life, My Health: Chronic Disease Self-Management Program
This workshop is for adults who are living with the challenges of one or more chronic conditions. Participants will learn several techniques for dealing with issues such as pain, fatigue and difficult emotions.  Each participant will recieve a copy of the book, "Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions," and a relaxation tape/CD.  Each class meets for 2½ hours once a week for six weeks. Diabetes Self-Management Program
This workshop is for adults who are living with Diabetes.  Caregivers are also welcome. Participants will learn several techniques for dealing with issues such as stress management, avoiding complications, and monitoring your condition.  Each participant will recieve a copy of the book, "Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions," and a relaxation tape/CD. Each class meets for 2½ hours once a week for six weeks.
