Advocate for Nursing Home Residents

Have a couple of spare hours per week to make a difference for nursing home residents?

Somerville-Cambridge Elder Services is seeking a new volunteer advocate for our Long-Term Care Ombudsman program.

As an Ombudsman, you will join a dedicated group that works to improve the quality of life for nursing home residents, while also protecting their rights to privacy, dignity and responsive medical care. This volunteer position requires sensitivity to the needs of others and an ability to speak up on residents’ behalf.

All Ombudsmen volunteers must attend a three-day certification to prepare for work as resident advocates.  Our volunteers make weekly visits to local nursing homes, to talk with residents and give them an opportunity to discuss problems or concerns.  Visiting hours and days are flexible, and can be varied from week to week (including weekends and evenings).
