One-Day Volunteering

Somerville-Cambridge Elder Services (SCES) depends on volunteers to make many of its programs possible. We offer the following one day volunteer opportunities for individuals and corporations.

Brown Bag Program

SCES in conjunction with the Greater Boston Food Bank supplies 650 low-income seniors with a free bag of groceries. 15-20 volunteers are needed to help unload the Food Bank truck, sort food, and fill brown bags.  Every second Tuesday of the month, from 8:30-11:00 am.

Brown Bag is currently on hiatus due to the Coronavirus pandemic

Farmers Market Coupon Distribution

A federally funded program where the Commonweath of Massachusetts provides the SCES’ Nutrition Department with $25.00 coupons that are distributed to low-income seniors for the purchase of fresh fruits and vegetables from local Farmers Markets. The coupons are distributed from various locations in Somerville and Cambridge by volunteer teams.  Annually, one week in July from 9:30-11:30 am and/or 1:00-3:00 pm.

Office Assistant

Periodically throughout the year you will be called when needed to perform Clerical Duties, Mailings, and/or Telephone Assistance.  Weekdays from 8:30 am – 4:30 pm, as needed.

Thanksgiving Meals-On-Wheels

Approximately 15 teams (a runner and driver) are needed to deliver Meals on Wheels to homebound seniors. This event is popular with people who are looking to do something meaningful and show thanks for their own blessings.  Annually, on Thanksgiving morning from 9:30 am – 12:30 pm.
