One-Day Volunteering

Somerville-Cambridge Elder Services (SCES) depends on volunteers to make many of its programs possible. We offer the following one day volunteer opportunities for individuals and corporations.

Brown Bag Program (Volunteers are urgently needed)

SCES in conjunction with the Greater Boston Food Bank supplies 650 low-income seniors with a free bag of groceries. 15-20 volunteers are needed to help unload the Food Bank truck, sort food, and fill brown bags.  Every second Tuesday of the month, from 8:30-11:00 am.

Cambridge Connections Memory Cafe

Description: Help us host Cambridge Connections, a free and fun monthly social gathering for people with memory loss or forgetfulness and their care partners, family, or friends. Our Memory Café is a safe and inclusive space that features conversation, activities, and light refreshments. Volunteers are needed to assist our facilitator with setup, participate in the activities, and interact with attendees, to help create a warm and inviting experience for everyone.

Skills: Sensitive, reliable, good verbal and non-verbal communication, and patient.

Time commitment is 3 hours, once per month (from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the third Friday of each month.)

Farmers Market Coupon Distribution

A federally funded program where the Commonweath of Massachusetts provides the SCES’ Nutrition Department with $25.00 coupons that are distributed to low-income seniors for the purchase of fresh fruits and vegetables from local Farmers Markets. The coupons are distributed from various locations in Somerville and Cambridge by volunteer teams.  Annually, one week in July from 9:30-11:30 am and/or 1:00-3:00 pm.

Thanksgiving Meals-On-Wheels

Approximately 15 teams (a runner and driver) are needed to deliver Meals on Wheels to homebound seniors. This event is popular with people who are looking to do something meaningful and show thanks for their own blessings.  Annually, on Thanksgiving morning from 9:30 am – 12:30 pm.

Holiday Bagging

The Holiday Bagging enables homebound seniors to experience fresh fruits, vegetables along with “holiday treats”. Volunteers are needed to bag these items for distribution (10-15 volunteers are needed).  Annually, one weekday in early December from 10:00 am – 12:30 pm.

Office Assistant

Periodically throughout the year you will be called when needed to perform Clerical Duties, Mailings, and/or Telephone Assistance.  Weekdays from 8:30 am – 4:30 pm, as needed.
