SCES Hosts Therapeutic Paint Day

The connection between art and wellness was highlighted by a recent painting workshop that was hosted by Somerville-Cambridge Elder Services (SCES).

The event was facilitated by SCES case manager Lauren Jones, who is working toward receiving licensure in art therapy. Over the course of more than an hour, she demonstrated the relaxing qualities of creating with acrylic paint and Japanese water marbling.

The workshop was organized by SCES case manager Amanda Goguen, who is Supportive Living Coordinator for Properzi Manor as part of a longstanding partnership between the Somerville Housing Authority and SCES. In that capacity she organizes regular events for residents, such as movie nights.

“Some of the residents had expressed an interest in painting, and I typically try to pick events I think they might be interested in,” said Goguen.

“The residents left feeling proud of something they had made themselves,” she added.
“One resident even asked me if we could invite Lauren Jones back soon for more painting.”
