It’s no secret that Vinal Bakery is a favorite among SCES staff. Located down the road on Somerville Avenue, Vinal offers beverages and sweet treat pick-me-ups that can cure any 2 p.m. weekday energy slump. The agency was honored to be chosen as Vinal’s “Round Up” partner this past July and August, offering all customers the choice to round up their orders and donate the proceeds to SCES’ work.
The “Round Up” program, which began a little over a year ago, fits with Vinal’s vision of becoming embedded in the community and supporting its diverse array of neighbors. Vinal Owner and Pastry Chef Sarah Murphy said that making the choice to feature SCES as its summer “Round Up” partner was an easy one.
“Round Up is an easy way for us to help others in our community, which we love to do!” said Sarah. “SCES was a perfect fit for the program. We’re impressed by the work SCES staff do to help our neighbors stay independent in their homes and live with dignity through challenging times.”
Vinal, which specializes in homemade English muffins, opened its doors in April of 2019. Sarah envisioned Vinal as a neighborhood spot that could serve the surrounding community with great food, drink, and hospitality—and it’s done just that and more. Vinal has been featured on the Phantom Gourmet and expanded to include Vinal General Store, a lunch spot that serves deli-style sandwiches, rotating soft-serve flavors, beer, wine, and an assortment of retail options highlighting small producers.
Sarah feels lucky that Somerville has such a large community of people committed to supporting small businesses, which was key during the pandemic. Though it was a challenging, tumultuous time, Vinal felt love and support from old and new patrons alike.
“We’re grateful to be among people who support what we do and allow us to support our amazing Vinal team!” said Sarah.
The “Round Up” campaign raised over $1,000 towards SCES’ programs that enable older adults and people with disabilities to remain living in their homes or the setting of their choosing for as long as possible. Thank you so much for your support, Vinal team!
