Volunteers appreciated at SCES

Volunteers play a vital role at Somerville-Cambridge Elder Services (SCES), and the agency recently recognized several that go above-and-beyond the call of duty.

Together, Adrienne Ficara, Diane Martin, and Nancy Murphy volunteer at the SCES offices more than 120 hours each month, and they were recently surprised with a spread of lunchtime muffins, cinnamon rolls, coffee and fresh fruit. Volunteer Programs Manager Marie Mazzeo said the group really earned the lunch date.

SCES Volunteers

“We wanted to do something special for the office volunteers, to show how much we appreciate everything they do,” she said.

SCES has a roster of more than 400 volunteers, who support programs that provide meals, medical supports, and general well-being for older adults.

SCES is currently seeking volunteers for the following programs:

  • The Money Management Program matches trained and insured volunteers with older adults who need help paying bills, writing checks, balancing their checkbooks, budgeting monthly income, and running bank errands.
  • The Medical Advocate Program matches volunteers with an older adult who needs help understanding his or her medical care. Medical Advocates become familiar with the older adult’s medical issues, and accompany them to doctor’s visits to make sure their concerns are addressed, and to make sure the older adult understands the doctor’s diagnoses, prescriptions and instructions.
SCES is also seeking Spanish-speaking volunteers for the Medical Advocate Program.
  • The SeniorPet Program helps older adults with pet issues such as medical needs, food assistance, pet concerns, and proper procedures to insure pet safety as well as uniting older adults with older pets.
